Chica and Bonnie had run off somewhere by the time we arrived, but I could smell the faint scent of lemons and grapes. Freddy was a bit tougher to clean; the stains and muck on him were much harder to remove than the ones on Chica and Bonnie. Freddy definitely seemed to be the oldest of the threesome, both in age and in spirit. We started a conversation in order to get to know each other better. I was surprised to find out that Freddy already knew who I was; apparently, he noticed that I always tried to make the kids as happy as possible during the day. “You seem very dedicated to working here,” he commented as I scrubbed the back of his ears, “ Is there a reason behind it?”
I was caught off guard by his question; I was working for a measly 4 bucks an hour at a place whose reputation had gone down the drain and was facing bankruptcy. I wondered if he knew about the state of the pizzeria...
“Well,” I started, “I don’t know if you know about what’s going to happen to this place at the year_”
“Yes, I’m aware that it’s going to be shut down,” Freddy responded, “Are you trying to save this old place?”
“Essentially,” I replied, “I know it’s a bit of a stretch, but I want to at least bring some life back into this place before it closes.”
Freddy sighed. “That’s probably why Chica revealed our secret to you; she’s been hoping that someone would be able to help us regain our reputation. Recently, the only positive reviews about this place mention having this one particular hostess who makes the Veggie Beach pizza; I presume that’s you.”
I hadn’t been aware of these reviews centering around me; I guess I was making a difference after all. “So does anyone else know about your secret?” I asked. Freddy shook his head gently.
“Normally the night guards get scared just seeing us move around at night; afterwards, they would never come back.” Freddy sighed, “Not like anyone would even want to work here...” He lowered his head; no wonder he was so stressed. I wiped down the back of his head gently.
“Well, I wouldn’t mind working the night shift again,” I offered the bear, “I mean, I won’t tell anyone about your secret, obviously, but I want to help you guys out as much as I possibly can.” I carefully put my hand on his shoulder. “Would that be alright with you?”
Freddy looked at me earnestly. “Of course,” he said quietly, “If that is what you wish to do.” He glanced at my wrist, carefully examining my watch as he did. “It’s almost 6 AM, you should probably head back to the office now.” I had been so caught up cleaning Freddy and his friends, I hadn’t realize that several hours had gone by.
“Well, you’re good to go now, Mr. Fazbear,” I said politely.
He stood up, now much cleaner than he had been before, and the two of us walked back to the show stage. I could hear him sniffing subtly; I guess he liked the smell of chocolate on him. I poked my head inside the dining hall to find Bonnie and Chica sitting on the stage chatting. The two of them looked up as Freddy walked towards them; they stood up instantly, making way for their leader as he got onto the stage. I began to make my way back down to the office, taking a different hallway than the one I had walked down before.
As I crossed through the dining area, I noticed something moving in the corner of my eye; I turned around and found myself looking at Pirate’s Cove, which had been out of order since I started working at this place. The starry curtains almost seemed to ripple, as if someone was hiding behind it. I had heard about a fourth animatronic that used to be there... but I guessed that would have to be for another time.
I had gathered up my belongings and was about to clock out when I saw Chica peeking in the window. I motioned her to come in, but she didn’t move. I walked out of the office and approached her; she continued to look at me curiously, if not a bit sadly. “Are...are you leaving us?” she asked weakly.
“Don’t worry, Chica,” I reassured her calmly, “I’ll be back to check on you later on this afternoon. I work here, remember? And I’ll be back again tonight too.” She smiled with relief; she had obviously taken a liking to me.
“Thank you, Elena,” she chirped, “Bonnie and I really enjoy your company here. And to tell you the truth...” She hesitated before whispering into my ear, “...This is the first time Freddy has left the stage in years. He wouldn’t do that for just anyone, you know.”
I was stunned by this. “Chica,” I started again, “I never expected to meet someone like you here, but I’m happy that I did.” I smiled and offered my hand to her; instead of shaking it, Chica chose to hug me tightly. Boy, was I glad that I cleaned her first.
We were interrupted by Bonnie, who was on the other side of the hall. “C’mon, Chica!” he yelled, “We need to be back on stage!” He hopped off, quite literally I might add, and Chica began to make her way down the hall as well. I finally left the building, watching the morning employees begin to pull up. As I walked to my car, I could faintly hear music coming from the building; it was Freddy, playing his signature song once again. Don’t worry Freddy, your secret is safe with me. I’m gonna save this place if it’s the last thing I do.
